Topic 6 ~ Developing Fluency: Multiplying by 1-Digit Numbers

Video Lesson

6-1~ Arrays and Using an Expanded Algorithm
Objective: Students will record multiplication using an expanded algorithm.

Pose the Problem: A video store display shelf has videos stacked in 3 rows.  There are 12 videos in each row.  Build an array to show how many videos are on the shelf.

6-2~ Connecting the Expanded and Standard Algorithms
Objective: Students will multiply 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers using paper-and-pencil methods.

Pose the Problem: A large bus can seat 52 people.  If 8 of these buses are fully loaded to take all students from one school to a high school graduation, how many students are on all of the busses?

6-3~ Multiplying 2-Digit by 1-Digit Numbers
Objective: Students will multiply 2-Digit numbers by 1-Digit numbers using the standard algorithm and estimate to check for reasonableness.

Pose the Problem: Suppose a school ordered 7 boxes of books.  There are 25 books in each box.  How can you use paper and pencil to find how many books there are in all?  How can you check that your answer is reasonable?

6-4~ Multiplying 3-Digit and 4-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers
Objective: Students will use the standard algorithm to multiply 3 and 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers.

Pose the Problem: Bonnie has 4 jars that she wants to fill with pennies.  If she puts 231 pennies in each jar, how many pennies does she have all together?

6-5~ Multiplying by 1-Digit Numbers
Objective: Students will multiply 2-,3-, and 4- digit numbers by 1-digit numbers using the standard algorithm and estimate to check for reasonableness.

Pose the Problem: A Cineplex contains 4 movie theaters.  Each theater can seat 312 people.  Multiply to find how many people the Cineplex can seat in all.  Then, check that your answer is reasonable.

6-6~ Problem Solving: Missing or Extra Information
Objective: Students will identify what information in a problem is missing or is not needed.

Pose the Problem: A Cineplex contains 4 movie theaters.  Each theater can seat 312 people.  Multiply to find how many people the Cineplex can seat in all.  Then, check that your answer is reasonable.
